Day 2 Wrapup

October 28th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Given the internet issues last night and the need to play Wii (and watch the stupid, retarded, loser Rockies - who if they dont win tonight to validate my Game 5 tickets will be forever known in the Baldwin house as the Team That Shall Not Be Named) I was unable to post my thoughts about Day 2.

Day 2 started slowly with about 10 people here at 9am. I was afraid that the debates of Friday night would scare people away, and in some cases it seems to have. By 10am, we were back up to about 40 people and through out the morning more and more people trickled in. By the middle of the day we were back up to capacity and things were moving along crisply.

At 9am Ace made a presentation outlining the consensus that was achieved the night before. A simple 5 slide presentation that discussed functionality, basic layout and website flow. The last slide seemed to really spur action as each group was called on to answer a question or two.

As people broke back into their groups, there was general concern that something would be accomplished. Of all the teams, Creative/Design, which in the morning had a single member,  had cranked through a logo and an initial  web page template. Perhaps the Tao of Programming would be proven correct?

All that concern was lifted by the 10am meeting. Teams were focused and the rock was beginning to roll up the hill.

By about 1pm, StartupWeekend DC was looking more and more like what I remembered in Boulder. Groups working hard, innovating, discussing, solving problems. Our biggest hurdle in Boulder was the interaction between UX and development making direction unclear and feature creep onerous.

In DC, the UX and development teams worked much more closely together defining the product and feature set. In many ways, while debate started StartupWeekend DC, collaboration has become its hallmark. Each group is finding ways to interact with each other.

By 9pm, we had a working prototype and things look good for a Sunday launch. Then the internet made like Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper in the movie the Day the Music Died.

Amazingly, nobody left. Dev discussed different concepts, since only one machine could connect to the dev server at a time, they took turns committing code. BizDev continued to work on their business model, Creative/Design continued to create and Marketing continue to flesh out the brand strategy. UX played Wii. (Kidding! They created a feature creep board, and worked on product flow).

After about two hours of no internet, most of the groups had left (BizDev wrote DO NOT ERASE on a white board - always a good sign). But, when the web roared to life at about 11:30pm, the devs caught their second wind, and continued to code until we were kicked out of the building around 12:30am.

Stay tuned for todays updates (as you can see, dev has already posted a couple of updates).
